The Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF) is one of the first documents you need when moving to Portugal. It is essential for almost everything: opening a bank account, renting a home, signing contracts, paying taxes, and even getting a job.
How to Obtain Your NIF?
- In Person – You can request your NIF at a local tax office (Finanças) or a Citizen’s Shop (Loja do Cidadão).
- Online, Through a Fiscal Representative – If you are not a Portuguese resident, you must appoint a fiscal representative to apply for your NIF.
Required Documents:
- A valid passport or national ID
- Proof of address (this can be from your home country if you are not a resident yet)
- For non-EU residents: a fiscal representative declaration
